About the archive

History preserved with its sources visible.

The Royal Modika Heritage Archive is a living digital collection dedicated to Balobedu history, the founding royal houses of Modika, Mahasha and Mohale, clan praises and the Rain Queen succession.

Purpose

The archive brings manuscripts, published extracts and living testimony into one accessible record. It is intended to preserve family and national memory, make source documents easier to find and invite responsible correction from recognised custodians and researchers.

Sources and attribution

The historical narrative draws from the Mathekga, Modiba and Matatanya records, supplied comparative book extracts, clan praises and oral tradition. Interpretive pages link back to the available primary records wherever possible. Variant spellings and conflicting accounts are kept visible instead of being silently combined.

Editorial principles

  • Attribute claims. A statement belonging to one manuscript or oral account is identified as such.
  • Preserve uncertainty. Disputed kinship, dates and names are labelled rather than presented as settled fact.
  • Protect restricted knowledge. Sacred procedures and private family information are not published merely because they are known.
  • Keep originals accessible. Interpretations sit beside scans and downloadable records so readers can examine the evidence.
  • Correct responsibly. Material may be updated when stronger documentary evidence or testimony from recognised custodians becomes available.

Authorship and review

The archive is published by the Royal Modika Heritage Foundation. Page-level interpretations represent the archive’s editorial reading of the cited material, not a claim that every source or royal house gives an identical account.

Corrections and contributions

Descendants, elders, praise-poets, researchers and custodians are invited to identify errors or contribute relevant testimony and records. Corrections should name the affected passage and, where possible, include a source or explain the custodial basis for the proposed change.
